HCD is a co-operative and community economic development agency founded on the values of:
- self-help
- self-responsibility
- democracy
- equality
- equity
- solidarity
We also adhere to the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility, and caring for others. We aim for the development of a genuinely inclusive economy and of a fair society. We work to achieve this by working locally and inter-locally with like-minded people and organisations in all sectors and from all cultures.
Established in 1982, Hackney Co-operative Developments has specialised in business support, customised training, affordable workspace provision and creating suitable environments for small businesses, community groups and voluntary organisations in Hackney.
In 2006 we led the development of Gillett Square, a unique public space in the heart of Dalston, which since has been at the heart of much of our community development and cultural programming work.
Hackney Co-operative Developments is a not-for-profit organisation. We have members, not shareholders. Membership is open to anyone in Hackney who shares our goals, ethos and approach to community led economic regeneration.
Being a Community Interest Company (CIC) means that our property portfolio is a protected Hackney community asset. It cannot be broken up for private gain, but will be preserved to support local economic activity. Every penny we make goes to improving life for the community in Hackney.
HCD’s basic approach is community based. Our staff work with local people and their communities exploring ideas and opportunities jointly with them, establishing viable ways for their aspirations to be fulfilled.
